As of its opening weekend, Marvel’s Black Panther is the #1 movie in the world. And, what’s not to love? I saw the costumes from the film up close and personal at last year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. The costumes are beyond magnificent. If you’d like to see a few yourself and can’t make it to D23, check out the movie showtimes at the El Capitan with some of the film’s costumes on display.
The King of Wakanda can be found in person daily in the Hollywood Land area of Disney’s California Adventure. Check with a cast member or the Disneyland app for his appearance schedule.
Want to catch his entrance, complete with superhero entrance music? Hang out near the large gates between Guardians of the Galaxy Mission:Breakout and the Hyperion Theater, currently showing Frozen. The Black Panther will enter with a contingent of his Dora Milaje bodyguards.
The Black Panther currently has his own photo set indoors inside the Stage 17 building, but I visited for the first time on a day when that space was taken by a Gospel Competition. If that happens to you, His Royal Highness will instead use his SHIELD jeep as a photo backdrop. It can’t compare to the Wakandan set they have indoors, though.
Black Panther isn’t the only draw. His Dora Milaje guards are amazingly in character. They constantly scan and interact with the crowd under the guise of looking for threats to their charge. If you step too closely to the jeep or Black Panther as he walks, they will intervene and challenge you. Ladies, if you’re reading this, I love your guest interactions so much!
The King is gracious, and the Dora Milaje are very serious. It’s a delightful interaction that’s well worth the wait you’re going to encounter.
Black Panther joins other Marvel heroes: Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, Loki, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Groot, Gamora, and Starlord as photo ops in Hollywood Land. Always be sure to check with a cast member or the Disneyland app for their appearance schedules, and don’t become too upset if they’re called away for SHIELD meetings, Wakandan briefings, or Asgardian business. Sometimes even heroes need to step back into air conditioning so they don’t fall over.
